Shoe Tip: Running shoes feeling flat? When to buy your new shoes!

Knowing when to replace a running shoe is difficult. When is too much for your running shoe?

Athlete’s running marathons or training extensively know they need to regularly replace their shoes. Often it is the average person working out a few times a week in the gym or wearing their running shoes for everyday comfort that doesn’t realize they should replace their shoes more often. Even a ½ hour walk a day can take a toll on your walking shoes.

A general guideline is to replace your shoes every 6 to 12 months. How long shoes last can depend on how often you wear them, how long your wear them (1 hour or all day long), your own physique and what you are doing in them.

  • Someone wearing running shoes everyday at work where they are on their feet for 8 hours will probably find they need to replace them around the six month mark.
  • Running on a treadmill for a 1/2hour a few times a week isn’t as hard on your shoes as running on gravel road.

 

Clues: When to Replace Your Shoes

Some people will often go by the wear on the sole of the shoe and although this can be a good indicator on how many miles you’ve put on your shoes, the midsole can breakdown before excessive wear shows on the tread.  Cracks and compression in the midsole could indicate that the shoes don’t have as much support and cushioning as the day they were new.

These are some clues that are telling you that the support and cushioning is gone. If you experience any of these symptoms you might need to replace your shoes.

  • Sore knees
  • Sore back
  • Sore feet
  • Shin splints (good indication that the cushioning is gone and the shock dissipating value is gone)
  • Plantar fasciitis (good indication that the arch support is gone in a shoe)

Tips: Help Your Shoes Last Longer

  • Rotating your running shoes can help them last longer.  Only use your new athletic shoes for the gym and working out and use your older shoes for running errands or casual comfort.
  • Don’t wear the same shoes every day.  Giving your shoes a good day to dry out from perspiration will help your shoes last longer.
  • Don’t dry your shoes near heat.  Heat from a furnace vent or direct sunlit can damage materials and cause them to break down faster.

Mark on your calendar a reminder that you need to buy new shoes.  Time flies and we often forget when we bought our running shoes and don’t realize how old they are.  When you buy new shoes, count ahead on a calendar how long you generally find your shoes last and mark a reminder to buy new shoes. Don’t wait till it’s too late; don’t let your shoes deflate!

3 Steps to Revive your Running Shoes and Athletic Footwear!

Don’t want to replace your favourite running shoes? Here are three steps to help keep your shoes alive for many more workouts!

Step One: Protection

From the first step you take in your running shoe or athletic footwear, you should be using a protector. A universal spray protector like Tana’s All Protector will work on a variety of materials in a running shoe. Tana’s All Protector guards your new shoes from dirt, stains and moisture…to keep the new running shoe look.

Step Two: Cleaning

Although many customers tell us they put their running shoes in the washing machine, here at Becker’s, we don’t recommend that cleaning procedure. Running shoes go through a lot from road, to trail and more, collecting dirt and stains on the many different types of materials that makes up your running shoe. Due to different materials, running shoes can be hard to clean.

Choose a shoe cleaner that can be used on a nylon mesh, leather, suede and synthetic materials. Tana’s Fast Acting Cleaner works great on leather and synthetic running or walking shoes. Just spray it on and wipe it off. It’s easy and it dries quickly.

Diluted Sunlight detergent also works well as a gentle cleaner on your shoes.

  • Remove the insoles and wash them separately (speeds up the drying process)
  • Damp your shoe (enough to get the detergent working)
  • Gently scrub with the diluted Sunlight detergent
  • Rinse off the detergent
  • Don’t dry in the dryer, near any heat or direct sunlight (Extreme heat may damage your runners)
  • Air dry is the way to go!

Step Three: Odor Control

Anyone who has driven a team of soccer players home after a game; is well aware of how smelly athletic shoes can get! Periodic cleaning will help keep odors down. For between games, use Tana Shoe Freshener. When you get home kick off your shoes and keep Tana Shoe Freshener near for a quick spritz!
